The major opposition party, the Pakistan People’s Party, has not taken part in the election. It boycotted the vote over a change in the original date of polling, together with two other parties. Pakistan’s President is a largely ceremonial role and is not elected by popular vote, but by a vote by legislators in the national assembly and senate and the four provincial assemblies.
